CARTERVILLE — It is with great sadness that the family of Michael Joseph Kowalewski announces his passing on Oct. 26, 2017, at the age of 77 years.

A longtime resident of Southern Illinois, Michael was a professor of Philosophy at John A. Logan College in Carterville for 25 years. While studying for his doctorate, he worked as a coal miner for the Old Ben Coal Company in the 1980s. After receiving his Ph.D from Southern Illinois University in Carbondale, he accepted a teaching position with John A. Logan College in 1988 and continued to teach until his retirement in 2013. He had a passion for the sciences, politics, boxing, World War II history and his family.

Michael will be lovingly remembered by his son, Greg (Donna); his daughter, Kisa; his grandchildren, Alissa, Nicholas, and Julius. He was predeceased by his wife of 36 years, Patricia Kowalewski.

Memorial visitation will be from 1 to 3 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 11, in Riggin-Pillatsch and Burke Funeral Home in Carterville. Private services for the family will follow.
