CARBONDALE — Robert C. Radtke, 81, died Saturday, Dec. 30, 2017, in Memorial Hospital of Carbondale with his wife, Jan, and family by his side.
He was born in Oconomowoc, Wisconsin, to Clarence and Doris Radtke, April 7, 1936.
He graduated from the Lutheran Concordia High School and College in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. He attended the Lutheran Seminary in St. Louis, where he met the love of his life, Janice Lobitz. They were married in Independence, Kansas on August 30, 1958. He completed his bachelor’s degree in psychology at UW Milwaukee, and later received his masters and doctorate in experimental psychology from U of Iowa in 1963 while raising three children. Upon receiving his doctorate he accepted a position at the University of Rochester, New York, where he taught for three years. In 1966 the family moved to Carbondale, where he was on the faculty of SIU. During his 30 plus years at SIU he served as professor in psychology and held the position of Associate Dean of the graduate school. He held many leadership positions and remained active with the university system after retirement.
Bob enjoyed the adventure of travelling the world near and far, visiting many friends and family. His travels included many golfing outings, and camping trips, which were a big part of family life. He enjoyed skiing, as well as walks with friends around Campus Lake. He never tired of learning and was always up for a stimulating intellectual conversation.
Bob was very generous with time and service to his community, serving on many boards of local, state, university, and church related organizations.
He will be missed by many, especially the wife he adored, Jan; daughter, Tam (John); son, Tim (Jenny); son Jon (Lis); his grandchildren, Sarah (Nate), Kris (Adriane), Cameron, Erin, Kaylyn, Sabrina, Ben, Nik (their mother, Fairoz) and Mateo; great-grandchildren, Jackson and River; brother, Dennis; other relatives and many friends.
Bob is remembered by many for his kindness, perpetual good cheer, and generosity to everyone.
Memorial Services will be at 11 a.m. Saturday, Jan. 6, in Epiphany Lutheran Church, 1501 W. Chautauqua, Carbondale. Visitation with the family will be from 5 to 7 p.m. Friday, Jan. 5, in Crain Pleasant Grove-Murdale Funeral Home, 31 Memorial Drive, Murphysboro and from 10 to 11 a.m. Saturday at Epiphany Lutheran Church.
Memorials may be made to Jackson County Stage Company and will be accepted at the funeral home and/or Southern Illinois Music Festival with checks made payable to SIU Foundation with IL Music Festival in the memo line.
