HERRIN — Rosemary Mathis, 74, passed away 4:53 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 31, 2017, in Herrin Hospital.
Rosemary retired from Piasa School District in Brighton, after 28 years. After retirement from the Piasa School District, she worked at Dillard’s in Marion.
Rosemary was a docent at the Harrison Bruce Historical Village at John A. Logan College in Carterville; member of the Herrin Area Historical Society, Genealogy Society of Southern Illinois, Home and Community Education (HCE) of Williamson County, Williamson County Historical Society and the Trail of Tears Association. She was twice nominated for Cambridge Who’s Who Registry of Executives, Professionals and Entrepreneurs.
Rosemary was born Aug. 17, 1943, in Herrin, to Lemuel G. and Lucille Anna Mae (Cox) Mathis.
Surviving are three sisters, Linda Gale Mathis, Billie Mathis and Brenda Mathis, all of Herrin; three aunts, Grace Ayers of Herrin, Francis Cox of Pontiac, Michigan, Loretta Cox of Crossville, Tennessee; extended family members whom she considered an adopted brother and sisters, Phil Stucker of Energy, Joyce Morris of Herrin, Lois McCoy of Easton, Maryland; and numerous cousins.
She was preceded in death by her parents; brother, Ralph William Mathis; and a sister, Diana Lynn Mathis.
Memorial services will be at 11 a.m. Saturday, Jan. 6, in Meredith-Waddell Funeral Home in Herrin, with the Rev. John Annable officiating. Visitation for family and friends will be from 10 to 11 a.m. Saturday at the funeral home. Interment will be in Herrin City Cemetery in Herrin.
