The medium-security state prison in Pinckneyville was placed on lockdown Friday after an inmate attacked and injured a guard.

An Illinois Department of Corrections spokeswoman said agency officials are investigating the incident, which union officials have said are on the rise at prisons throughout the state.

The guard’s injuries were apparently not life threatening. “The officer was seen by facility medical staff but remained at work,” IDOC spokeswoman Stacey Solano said in an email message Friday.

In July, a group of correctional officers outlined what they said was an increase in assaults by inmates. They blamed it on overcrowding within a system built to house about 33,000 inmates, but currently has about 49,000.
