BENTON - Police are not releasing information about their presence Thursday at a smoke shop in Benton.

Several Benton and West City police cars were seen blocking entry to The Smoke Break’s parking lot about 5 p.m. and into the evening.

The store at 601 W. Main St. sells a variety of tobacco and accessories, according to its website. Information about the incident will be released Monday, Benton police said.

Get rid of synthetic drugs in our region

    To The Editor:

Synthetic marijuana is being sold at tobacco shops and liquor stores in the Heartland. It is marketed as tea, incense, or herbs. The herbs are sprayed with chemicals that mimic the psychoactive properties of THC. Even though this product is labeled, “Not for Human Consumption “many of our kids and adults are smoking it.

These compounds long-term side effects have not been well-studied or documented. However, acute side effects of fake marijuana include trouble breathing, heart palpitations, panic attacks, hallucinations, vomiting, and seizures. CDC has also reported cases of suicide that have resulted from hallucinations.

What bothers me most is the moral and ethical dilemma the seller of these products presents. I personally visited two local vendors of this scourge, and they both knew that it was being smoked. I therefore request that all who read this contact their county commissioner, as I did months ago, and demand this be stopped. If they don’t, boycott the store.

God bless our kids and this great country!
