A 10-year-old Granite City boy died Saturday in what Jefferson County authorities believe was a “tragic accident.”
Christian G. Clark died when a round accidentally discharged from a gun and struck him, Jefferson County Sheriff Roger Mulch said in a news release.
Preliminary investigation revealed Clark and his 7-year-old sister were in their grandfather’s recreational vehicle when his sister picked up a long gun, Mulch said.
The gun accidentally discharged, striking Christian Clark with a round.
A 911 call at 3:30 p.m. alerted authorities to the shooting in the recreational vehicle, which was parked in a wooded area near a residence on Baseline Road in Dix, Mulch said.
Deputies found Clark’s body in the vehicle, which is owned by the children’s grandfather Jason G. Clark Sr. and is used as a hunting cabin.
State police, Illinois Department of Children and Family Services personnel and the Jefferson County coroner were called to the site. A search warrant was executed at the scene and evidence collected, Mulch said.
An autopsy was performed Sunday.
“All indications are that this was a tragic accident. Foul play is not suspected at this time,” Mulch said.
The investigation continues by the Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office, State’s Attorney, and Coroner as well as state police.
