Republican Dan Rutherford served in the Illinois House and Senate before being elected state Treasurer in 2010.

His sights may soon be set on another state office, the one occupied by Democratic Gov. Pat Quinn of Chicago.

Rutherford said he has some pressing business to take care of before he makes a decision to run, but the thought has crossed his mind.

“You know, I’ve been asked that. I am going to work very hard to be as good a state treasurer as I can and be chairman of Illinois for Governor Romney’s campaign for president, so my focus is on November 2012,” Rutherford said.

“I’m getting Mitt Romney to the White House. After that, and after the inauguration in January 2013, we’re going to take some time and step back and evaluate. I think a fair thing to say is, we have not precluded it, but a very candid answer is, I’m going to help change the White House first."
