SIU received a $50,000 grant from GeoAlliance to help install an energy-efficient geothermal heat pump heating and cooling system, according to an SIU news release.
The system will be installed in the Transportation Education Center near Southern Illinois Airport. The university has received three grants worth $150,000 from the GeoAlliance program, which is funded through the Illinois Clean Energy Community Foundation.
“We are front-runners and try to be green, be sensitive to the environment and utilize university resources more efficiently," said Phil Gatton, director of plant and service operations. "The university’s strong relationship with ICEFG has allowed us to promote geothermal systems for local school districts, churches and small businesses that can learn from our experiences.”
