CARBONDALE — Celebrate Women will mark its 17th year with a celebration from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. Thursday, March 7, in Ballroom B in the SIU Student Center.

Sponsors of the event include Women, Gender and Sexuality Studies, University Women’s Professional Advancement (UWPA) and the Carbondale Branch of American Association of University Women (AAUW).

The celebration will begin at 11:30 a.m. with a buffet luncheon. Proceeds from the luncheon will go to scholarship funding for women students. Luncheon tickets are $25 each and may be purchased through, by calling 618-521-0613; or by email at Donations are also welcome in any amount.

Chancellor Rita Cheng will give opening remarks followed by previous scholarship winner Mallary Allen and the Visions and Voices of Women in the Arts. Photographer Fern Logan will present Visions from the Goddess Series, followed by Jeanine Wagner and Margaret Simmons performing Art Songs by African American Composers.

An award ceremony will recognize recipients of Women Gender and Sexuality Studies/UWPA Research, Scholarly and Creative Activity Awards, winners of AAUW and Women, Gender and Sexuality Studies scholarships, Women’s Intersports Network in Southern Illinois (WIN SI) Awards, and UWPA Mentoring Awards. A reception will follow the award ceremony in the Corker Lounge. Coffee and dessert will be served.

Following the celebration at 2 p.m. in Ballroom A, recipients of the 2013 Research, Scholarly and Creative Activity Awards will discuss their work. Presenters include Assistant Professors Wenjing Xie (journalism), Angela Aguayo (cinema and photography), Valerie Boyer (Rehabilitation Institute), Julia Champe and Dorea Glance (educational psychology and special education), Laura Morthland (School of Architecture) and Patricia Saleeby (School of Social Work).
