Southern Illinois counties bordering the Ohio River across from Kentucky escaped major storm damage Saturday as the National Weather Service issued tornado warnings shortly after 2 p.m. Saturday when heavy rainfall moved into the region.

Meteorologist Kevin Smith of the National Weather Service in Paducah said tornado circulation destroyed a Hampton church in Livingston County, Ky., across the Ohio River from Pope County.

“Most of the damage occurred primarily up the Ohio River on the Kentucky side,” Smith said, noting there were some reports of fallen tree limbs east of Brookport.

The NWS issued severe thunderstorms Saturday night for the region from Anna through Marion north to Carmi.
