Three SIU Board of Trustees members’ terms expire Jan. 21 but may continue to serve up to 60 days longer while the governor decides whether or not to reappoint them or replace them with new people.

Board chairman John Simmons, vice chairman Ed Hightower, and secretary Mark Hinrichs, have terms up for reappointment. According to the governor’s office, each member has up to 60 days they can continue to serve on an expired appointment or until the governor makes his or her decision. After 60 days, the seats become vacant as a matter of law.

There is no word on when Gov. Pat Quinn will make the SIU appointments or whether they will come before the deadline.

Appointments to the SIU board have become the subject of speculation for the past year, as several board members and SIU President Glenn Poshard say Harrisburg trustee Roger Herrin repeatedly claimed Quinn will replace trustees who didn’t support his chairmanship on the board.

Herrin has repeatedly denied insider knowledge of the governor’s plans when asked by The Southern Illinois and said the decisions are solely up to Quinn.

The next regular board of trustees meeting is scheduled for Feb. 28 at SIU Edwardsville.
