Officials have confirmed the identity of the victim of a fatal vehicle fire Saturday.

Shaun H. Saltzman, 33, of rural Simpson was found dead in a burning vehicle just before 4 a.m. Saturday, according to Bailey Funeral Home in Vienna.

The Herrin Fire Department responded around 2:58 a.m. to a report of a vehicle fire in the parking lot of S.I. Bowl on Illinois 13 and Samuel Road.

Fire officials say the fire appears to have originated in the victim’s vehicle and spread to another car. Both vehicles were totaled, and a third sustained minor damage from the flames.

Saltzman was pronounced dead at the scene. Preliminary information suggests he died from smoke inhalation.

An Illinois State Police spokesman said state police were called to the scene, but the investigation is being led by the Herrin Police Department.
