MOMENCE - Authorities in northern Illinois say a 12-year-old boy has died in a house fire in Kankakee County.

The Chicago Tribune reported the boy was asleep in an upstairs bedroom when the early-morning fire struck Saturday. Momence Fire Protection District Chief Monty Buchanan says neighbors called emergency responders to the home. Buchanan says the boy's father tried to go back into the home to rescue his son. The father and the boy's 10-year-old brother were hospitalized.

Buchanan says firefighters saw "heavy fire blowing up the front of the house."

The victims' identities were not immediately released. Officials say the cause of the fire is under investigation.
