SIU’s eight-person team tied for 7th place overall in the college division, according to preliminary stats by NASA, at this weekend’s Great Moonbuggy Race at the U.S. Space & Rocket Center in Hunstville, Ala.
Teams raced for titles at the high school and college levels.
Racers from the University of Puerto Rico at Humacao claimed the college-division trophy. Team 1 from Teodoro Aguilar Mora Vocational High School of Yabucoa, Puerto Rico, won first place in the high school division.
SIU’s team was made up of Ryan Schmidt, Nick Sager, Caleb McGee, Dan Rogers, Dylan Sartin, Ryan Spencer, Zach Pringle and Kaylyn Shaw.
More than 90 total teams competed in the annual race.
The SIU team also won the Neil Armstrong Best Design Award, which was given to the team that came up with the best engineering solutions for lunar travel.
