Writer regrets giving kudos
To the Editor:
It is with great bemusement that I find myself having to respond to my own commentary, but unfortunately, my praise of Sen. Dick Durbin's and House Speaker Nancy Pelosi's willingness to counter high energy prices through expansion of oil exploration and drilling was short-lived ("Time for a comprehensive energy plan," July 15).
In an energy bill discussed last week in the Senate, Durbin had the opportunity to offer up a practical energy plan that would effectively lower energy costs. Unfortunately, he stated unequivocally that the bill to be presented will not allow for the exploration or expansion of offshore drilling. This is in contrast to an earlier statement affirming his desire to drill. Apparently, "open to drilling and responsible production" has stipulations meaning "open to drilling and responsible production anywhere but here, here, here …"
For her part, Pelosi struck down the possibility of an energy bill allowing for more drilling to be heard in the House. This bill would have increased the supply of U.S.-produced oil, hence assisting in the reduction of energy prices.
I regret that my kudos were undeserved for the senator and the speaker. In an era where Americans are having to make life-altering decisions because of the high price of fuel, our congressional leaders are playing politics instead of looking for real solutions.

SIUC should encourage carpooling
To the Editor:
Southern Illinois University Carbondale is a major employer in our region, and many of the employees drive their cars to work.
In the current fuel crisis, it would make sense for the university to make an aggressive effort to encourage carpooling by employees. To the east, there are major parking lots that could readily serve as meeting points, including Illinois Centre Mall, S.I. Bowl and John A. Logan College.
The university could even consider offering shuttle bus service twice a day to such parking areas.

'Little Women' earns bravo
To the Editor:
This past Saturday evening, I was privileged to witness an incredibly talented group of young people perform "Little Women" at McLeod Theater.
The production, staged as a joint project by SIUC and Carbondale Community Arts, featured highly talented actors and singers, all from local high schools. Directed by Jenny Holcombe, a recent graduate of our Master of Fine Arts program, this adaptation of the Louisa May Alcott classic was simply outstanding!
The performance capped a highly successful season of the McLeod Summer Playhouse, which offered five wonderful shows over the course of the summer.
My thanks to the performers. You were wonderful Saturday evening. I hope you consider enrolling at SIUC. We'd love to have you.
