It's the first day of fall. One of our favorite things about fall? The annual closure of Snake Road in the Shawnee National Forest, which protects snakes and amphibians as they migrate from summer to winter habitats. The road is closed to vehicles, but is open to foot traffic. The Southern's photo editor, Byron Hetzler, made the trip to Snake Road in April 2015 when the snakes and amphibians were migrating to their summer swamp habitats. Here's what he saw.
