To the Editor:

A free and independent press is guaranteed by the 1st amendment and helps preserve our democracy. From Senator Flake’s moving speech to congress last week: “We must never regard as “normal” the regular and casual undermining of our democratic norms and ideals.”

The mainstream press tries to report the facts. It is not perfect but when mistakes are made, news agencies retract and clarify as soon as possible. This president’s propensity of making false or misleading claims certainly makes their job more difficult.

All presidents have had issues with the press but none before this president has tried to discredit them. This president viciously attacks any report that he doesn’t like even if it is true. To say the press is the “enemy of the people”, threaten FCC licenses, and calling factual reporting “fake news” is not normal. Without the hardworking press core, Flynn would still be our National Security Advisor despite his undisclosed ties to Russia, Price would still be flying on private planes at taxpayer expense, we would not know about the continued devastation in Puerto Rico, to name a few.

It is our responsibility as citizens to be informed. Do not rely on social media, read several newspapers and watch a variety of network news both those you like and even those you don’t. Pay attention to the point of view of others even if it is different than yours. Do not become complacent and most importantly never fear to question.
