To the Editor:
I have been reading the accounts of the recent rash of accidents on Interstate 57 north of Marion. In a recent article in your newspaper, someone is reported as saying that this road should be safe, as it is relatively free of curves and hills. Conversely, I believe that is exactly the problem. The drivers suffer from boredom.
The state needs to take immediate action to correct this situation. I suggest they reduce the speed limit until all construction projects are completed. They should also install rumble strips to wake up dozing drivers.
If this does not work, then more drastic measures may be necessary. In the event of a death or injury, charge the driver with assault and confiscate the vehicle.
