To the Editor:

I just want to share a great big public thank you to Bob Baer, co-chair of the Southern Illinois Eclipse Steering Committee.

He has worked for over three years to prepare SIUC, Carbondale, and the state for the activities surrounding the Aug. 21 eclipse. He worked tirelessly throughout those three years and the result was an incredible amount of wonderfully positive recognition for SIU, Carbondale, and the state of Illinois. This was all a labor of love for Bob.

We should all be extremely grateful for the incredible sacrifice of his time and creativity. I am certain that without Bob Baer, the experience we all shared over the past three days would not have been near as exciting, fun, educational, and enlightening as it was. Through all these last three years Bob Baer has continued to be the humble and sharing person he has always been. He gave undivided attention to everyone involved from the most famous NASA scientist to the 10- and 11-year old Girl Scouts that were part of the activities.

Many organizations at SIU, in Carbondale, and the State must put him at the top of their lists for Person of the Year for 2017.
