To the Editor:
The outbreak of mass shootings must be stopped. The gun advocates are right: Guns don’t kill people — people do. I have two suggestions.
1. Some of these kids have brought the gun from home. Charge the adult owner of the gun as a co-conspirator or as a facilitator to the crime. I have yet to see one of them charged. I grew up on a farm with guns hanging on the wall by the back door. We were taught how to fire the gun, but we were also taught safety and a respect for other people.
2. You can’t hide a rifle in your pocket. Why do kids need a backpack or large duffel bag at school? I went from a one-room country school to a degree at SIU and I never had to carry such a bag.
We may not be able to stop all shootings, but let’s take a few steps to try. We know now that we can’t depend on the FBI for help. They’re too busy chasing Russians and fighting with the White House.
