ALLENDALE, Mich. -- SIU track and field scored four more event wins in open competition Saturday at the final day of the GVSU Big Meet hosted by Grand Valley State, pushing its meet total to seven.
Senior Kenya Culmer claimed her second event win of the weekend in the women's open triple jump after winning the high jump invite Friday night. Culmer bested second-place finisher Lindsay Lipa (11.42m/37-05.75) by two feet with her winning leap of 12.02m (39-05.25).
SIU's success in the jumps continued with a victory in the men's open triple jump by junior transfer Luke James. James, originally from Bethel University in Tennessee, pushed his season and personal best on his winning mark of 14.47m (47-05.75) -- which remains the second-best jump in the Missouri Valley Conference this season.
In the men's open shot put, fellow junior transfer Jeff Stewart (Rend Lake) brought home the event crown on a personal best throw of 16.37m (53-08.50) -- which, is the exact distance he threw at Rend Lake his freshman year to set the school record.
SIU's final event win came in the men's open pole vault, where SIU's crop of freshman had an impressive outing. Freshman Nathan Schuck won with a personal best clearance of 4.66m (15-03.50), which bested his previous PR by over one foot.
"I am very pleased with the meet overall," said SIU coach Connie Price-Smith. "We had a few really good performances over the course of our two days here, and I feel like we are heading in the right direction with conference right around the corner."
SIU will have one final tuneup before the MVC Indoor Conference Championships (Mar. 1-2) at the Friday Night Special next week hosted by Eastern Illinois.
