CARBONDALE - It took a tie-breaker for the Green Hills Golf Club to take the 20th annual Tony Stevens Cup away from defending champion Kokopelli in the 18-hole championship Sunday.

McLeansboro won the 9-hole championship by three strokes over two-time champ Shawnee Hills for its first title ever.

The 18-hole championship was decided on the best No. 3 team score on the second day. The Green Hills team of Tom Williams and Terry Bradshaw scored a 68, which edged the Kokopelli Brian Stotlar-Brian Schulian team by one stroke.

The first round was played at Green Hills Golf Club in Mount Vernon and used the modified Chapman alternate shot format. The second round was played at Jackson Country Club using the four ball format.

The Green Hills team of Brandon Bullard, Tom Portner, Brian Kolmer, Jerry Hale, Williams and Bradshaw led by one stroke (137) after the first round.

The No. 1 team of Bullard and Portner shot a 64 on the first day and 68 the second day. The No. 2 team of Kolmer and Hale carded a 73 on the first and a 62 that included nine birdies and no bogeys to account for the team total of 267.

"Yesterday we played really well," Portner said. "I was very pleased with our round because we shot 7 under and had only one bogey."

The Kokopelli Golf Club team of B. W. Bruce, Marsh Sheffer, Jesse Barge, Jr., John Koechner, Stotlar and Schulian were sitting in second place with a 138 after the first round.

Thanks to a low round of 61 Sunday by the No. 1 team of Bruce and Sheffer and a 68 by the No. 2 team of Barge, Jr. and Koechner, Kokopelli erased the lead to finish tied with Green Hills.

"I had a good partner and we played well together," Bruce said. "We didn't make any birdies on the same hole and by sharing birdies that kept the momentum going."

In the 9-hole championship, the McLeansboro Golf Club team of Corey Phillips, Bryan Warren, Shayne Downen, Chris Hart, Jeff Bowling, Lucas Jones and Jimmy Bowling started Sunday one stroke back of Nashville.

"It was a pretty exciting victory for us because it was the first one we've ever had," Jimmy Bowling said. "Everybody played very well and kept our heads in it."

The defending two-time champion Shawnee Hills Country Club started the day seven strokes off the pace and shot a low round of 130, but it was only good enough for a second place tie with Chester.

McLeansboro shot 113 Sunday with the No. 1 team of Phillips and Warren shooting its second 67.
