CARBONDALE — SIU closer Ryan Netemeyer is one of 52 pitchers on the National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association Stopper of the Year watch list, the organization announced Monday.

Netemeyer has 28 career saves, which is second among active pitchers in NCAA Division I. Netemeyer was a semifinalist for Stopper of the Year in 2017 after recording 15 saves, an SIU record. His 15 saves ranked sixth in the NCAA and led the Missouri Valley Conference.

He earned MVC pitcher of the week once and did not allow an earned run in the months of March or April, going 23 consecutive innings without allowing an earned run. He was also one of 21 semifinalists for College Baseball Foundation National Pitcher of the Year in 2017.

After the season, Netemeyer was named to the All-MVC and MVC Scholar-Athlete teams. He is a preseason All-MVC honoree in 2018. Netemeyer and Missouri State's Jake Fromson, who was the 2017 MVC pitcher of the year, were the two MVC pitchers on the 2018 Stopper of the Year watch list.

SIU opens the 2018 season on Friday at Jacksonville State.
