CARBONDALE — For the second straight week, SIU senior Bryn Handley is the Missouri Valley Conference swimmer of the week.
Handley earned the honor for her team-leading performances against nationally-ranked programs, Kentucky and Missouri on Friday and Saturday. She recorded top-three finishes in all of her individual events, winning the 1,000-yard freestyle and taking third in the 200 and 500 free.
Handley's time in the 1,000 free, 10:01.77, improved her best time in the Missouri Valley Conference. It is the 42nd-best time in the NCAA this season. Handley's time of 4:52.72 in the 500-yard freestyle is currently the best in the MVC and 53rd in the NCAA. In both the 200 and 500-yard freestyle, Handley outperformed Missouri's Kira Zubar and Courtney Evensen, two swimmers that have earned honorable mention NCAA All-American honors in their career.
Handley also helped her 400 freestyle relay team to a fifth place result. Handley was named MVC swimmer of the week for the eighth time.
Handley and the rest of the Salukis will be back in action on Nov. 16 when the team travels to West Lafayette, Indiana, for the Purdue Invite.
