CARBONDALE — SIU junior center Kavion Pippen was named the Missouri Valley Conference newcomer of the week Monday.

In his first official game at SIU, the 6-foot-10 Pippen recorded a double-double with 15 points and 10 rebounds in the Salukis' 81-66 win at Winthrop Friday night. He was 5 of 12 from the field and 5 of 6 from the free-throw line, and added three blocked shots and two steals. SIU won despite being down two injured starters.

A nephew of NBA legend Scottie Pippen, Kavion came to SIU after spending two seasons at Three Rivers (Missouri) Community College. Pippen averaged 10.5 points and 7.3 rebounds per game last season in 27 games. He shot 54.9 percent from the field and 67.3 percent at the foul line.

Pippen scored 23 points and had eight rebounds in his first game as a Saluki Nov. 4, in an exhibition win over Division II Rockhurst (Missouri) University. He made 11 of 13 from the field, grabbed eight rebounds and blocked three shots in 23 minutes.

Indiana State guard Brenton Scott was the MVC player of the week. Scott scored 24 points in the Sycamores' 90-69 upset of Indiana on the road Friday night.
