CARBONDALE — South Dakota became the Missouri Valley Football Conference's seventh team in the two major top 25 polls Monday.
The Coyotes beat Bowling Green, an FBS program, on the road Saturday, 35-27, to move to 2-0. South Dakota beat Drake, a non-scholarship program in the Pioneer League, 77-7 in its season opener. The Coyotes came in 23rd in the STATS top 25 poll and the FCS coaches list.
James Madison (2-0) of the CAA remained atop both polls, followed by North Dakota State (2-0), Sam Houston State (2-0) and South Dakota State (2-0). Jacksonville (Alabama) State (2-0) was fifth in the STATS poll, followed by Youngstown State (1-1), Villanova (1-1), Richmond (1-1), New Hampshire (2-0) and North Dakota (1-1).
Illinois State (1-0) remained 18th after its bye week. Western Illinois (2-0) moved up two spots to 20th after its 38-20 win at Northern Arizona, and Northern Iowa (1-1) remained 21st after a 45-38 overtime win over Cal Poly.
SIU (1-0) received six votes after its season-opening, 55-3 pounding of winless Mississippi Valley State (0-2).
Youngstown State, which lost in overtime at Pittsburgh in its opener and beat Robert Morris 30-0 Saturday, moved up to fifth in the coaches poll. The Valley got three teams in the top five for only the second time in history (Sept. 28, 2015, was the other). Illinois State was 14th, Northern Iowa was 18th, and Western Illinois was 22nd.
Eight of the Valley's 10 teams are in action this weekend. North Dakota State and Western Illinois are off.
