The Robinson 2A Sectional final is now set after Teutopolis held on for a 56-52 win over Eldorado.
Eldorado, like countless times this season, started the game hot. The Eagles led after one quarter, 15-11, capped off by a buzzer-beating floater from Ray May.
But the Wooden Shoes answered back. The second quarter was a quarter of runs. After Eldorado scored the first basket of the quarter, Teutopolis went on a 7-0 run to take their first lead of the night. But Eldorado would answer right back with a 6-0 run of their own to regain the lead, before the Shoes went on another 7-0 run to end the half with a 25-23 lead.
The Wooden Shoes were able to stretch their lead out to four to open the fourth quarter. The Eagles then tried to force a rally in the final minutes of the game. After trailing by as many as nine points, Eldorado again trimmed down the Shoes lead to three, thanks to a cold stretch from the free throw line by Teutopolis.
Despite that brief free throw slump, the Shoes would hit enough free throws to hold onto the lead, and the victory, going 16 for 26 from the line for the game. While Eldorado had about the same success rate at the line, they saw fewer opportunities, going 6 for 9 on free throws. Teutopolis led for much of the fourth quarter, but it was a back and forth ball game, as the contest saw 11 lead changes and six ties.
Eldorado ends the season 29-3. On the backs of this season and last, Eldorado has set a school record for most wins in back-to-back seasons, with 57 wins total.
After the game, Eldorado head coach Josh Bradley reiterated part of what he told his team, saying “It hurts right now, but when they came in as freshman, if we had said when you graduate we're going to be 57-7, you’re going to win two Eldorado Holiday Tournaments for the first time in school history, you’re going to win two conference championships, you’re going to win two regionals, we all would have said, you know what, we had a heck of a run. We had a great two years of basketball.”
Teutopolis improves to 22-8 on the year, and sets up a matchup of 2-seeds at the Robinson sectional. The Wooden Shoes will play the Mount Carmel Golden Aces on Friday, last year’s 2A runner-up.
