CENTRALIA — Carbondale’s Maggie Bryant shot a 76 on Monday to win the individual title at the South Seven Conference Tournament at Greenview Golf Club in Centralia.

Belleville Althoff won the tournament with a 347, while the Terriers finished with a 385.

Bryant recorded just one birdie in the round, but had nothing bigger than a five on her scorecard.

“I was really happy,” she said. “It was actually the best round I’ve had in a competition. It was one better than my best round. My putting wasn’t very good, but my iron play was strong. I was putting them tight on the greens so I was getting a lot of pars.

“It was definitely really steady. I’m hoping to play just as well at regionals if not better. I’ve been playing pretty well, so I’m hoping for the best.”

She was runner-up in the conference tournament last year.

“I’ll definitely put it on my résumé for college,” Bryant said. “That will help out.”

“She’s done great all year,” said Carbondale coach Lindsey Baine. “She’s just peaking at the right time, 76 is awesome. She’s kind of leading the pack. She gets her head in the game and doesn’t leave it. She just stays in there and plays on.”

Bryant’s individual effort wasn’t enough to offset Belleville Althoff’s depth.

The Crusaders posted the second, third and fourth best scores of the day. Abigail Irwin finished at 83, Alaina Irwin 84 and Gabby David 88. The Crusaders placed five players on the all-conference squad despite the fact that only four scores from each team are counted.

The top 10 players earned all-conference honors.

Following the Althoff contingent were Se’Arria Alexander, Centralia 89; Madison Weilbucher, Althoff,92; Lacey McTall, Centralia, 92; Paige Bird, Carbondale 93; Jordan Lewis, Althoff, 94; and Colleen Ashby, Mount Vernon, 98.

The tournament began with the course shrouded in fog.

“They (Carbondale) played pretty well,” Baine said. “It was rough this morning with all the fog. It was pretty wet. I think they struggled to start off.”
