HERRIN — The Carbondale volleyball team continued to roll and remained undefeated Thursday night.

Maddie Misner produced 14 kills with eight digs as the Terriers swept Herrin, 25-21, 25-12 in prep action.

Carbondale improved its record to 9-0.

“Yeah, it’s good, but 9-0 means nothing when it gets down to regional time where it is single elimination,” said Carbondale coach Fae Ragan. “We’ve got to peak at the right time, and I’ve already given them a lecture about that this early in the season. We’re doing a lot of physical things in practice, and they can’t bellyache about it because it is all preparing us for regionals.”

The Terriers jumped out to an 8-2 lead in the second set. Naudia Johnson had a pair of kills during a five-point Carbondale run.

Misner notched a kill and an ace as the Terriers opened up a 15-5 advantage.

“Our blocking was a lot better in that second set,” Ragan said. “Naudia has a lot of athletic ability, and I was proud of our team by really spreading out our offense. Naudia hit well, and they only single blocked in the middle.”

Marissa Russell threw down a kill to pull Herrin within 22-9, but Carbondale went on to claim victory.

The Tigers (8-6) weren’t able to do much at the net in this contest.

“I thought we came out with a lot of intensity in game one, and we fought very hard,” said Herrin coach Karen Jurich. “Carbondale plays more of a power game, so if you can just fight with them a little bit, they’re either going to score a point for them or score a point for us. We were hoping just to hang tough and get some good things to happen for us, and they did there for a while.”

The first set turned out to be much closer. Carbondale took a 14-7 lead, but the Tigers fought back to make it 23-21. But Carbondale’s Emma Metz tipped the ball over the net for a point, and the Terriers took the opener.

“We got on a roll and made some incredible defensive plays,” Jurich said. “Our setters were doing a good job of hustling and getting it in the air. To Carbondale’s credit, they blocked really well in game two.”

Marissa Russell led Herrin with five kills, and Ashley Owens added six digs.

Claire Beaupre contributed 12 assists and nine digs for Carbondale. Johnson added four blocks and four kills. Megan Bily tallied 17 digs.
