Tire tracks across Illinois 13 and a grass patch near The Haven remain following a fatal car crash Monday that left three dead and a child critically injured.

Updated at 11:40 a.m. Tuesday:  Three people were killed in a three-vehicle accident Monday night at the intersection of Illinois 13 and Cambria Road.

At 9:30 p.m., three cars -- a Pontiac Firebird, Toyota Scion SXC and Porsche 911 -- were involved in a wreck. 

The Pontiac and Porsche were west bound on Illinois 13 approaching Cambria Road. The Toyota was east bound on Illinois 13 turning onto Cambria Road. 

The Pontiac, driven by Abdullah M. Alfadhi, 18, of Carbondale, struck the Toyota and caught fire. Stephanie D. Stowers, 29, of Marion was driving the Toyota. Both were killed.

The driver of the Porsche, Frank M. Walker, 47, of Carbondale, lost control while attempting to avoid the wreck and slid into Crab Orchard Lake. Carterville Fire Department Dive Team recovered the Porsche and Walker’s body.

A 3-year-old male of Marion remains in critical condition after being flown to a regional hospital.

The investigation continues, but excessive speed is believed to have contributed to the severity of this crash.

Illinois State Police were assisted at the scene by Williamson County Sheriff’s Department, Crainville Police Department, Carterville Police Department, John A. Logan Police Department, United States Fish and Wildlife Law Enforcement, Carbondale Police Department and Carterville Fire Department.

Updated at 11 a.m. Tuesday: One of the victims in the crash has been identified as Dr. Frank Walker of New Horizons Obstetrics and Gynecology. 

New Horizons posted the following message on its Facebook page Tuesday: "It is with great sadness and heartbreak that we announce the loss of a dear friend and colleague, Dr. Frank Walker, in a tragic accident last night. We will miss his friendship, his humor, and his deep love for his patients. We ask that you keep his family in your prayers."

One passenger remains in critical condition. The names of the deceased have not been released, pending notification of family.

Original from 10:20 p.m. Monday: At least one person is dead after a multiple-vehicle crash Monday in Carterville.

Emergency responders were called to Illinois 13 and Cambria Road for a report of a multiple-vehicle crash about 9:30 p.m. Monday, according to a news release from Illinois State Police. The crash had a fatality, according to the release.

Police and fire departments were on the scene as of press time on Illinois 13, both east and westbound, are closed with traffic diverted off at Spillway Road and Greenbriar Road.

Little other information was available late Monday but initial reports indicated one vehicle went into Crab Orchard Lake, while the other vehicle was on fire.

A number of emergency vehicles responded including fire, police and a search and rescue unit.
