CARROLL L KELLY Sesser-Valier Distinguished Alumni 2021 Recipient GOODE BARREN TOWNSHIP HIGH SCHOOL, 1956 GRADUATE The Sesser-Valier Community Unit School District No. 196 Board of Education and Administration would like to congratulate the 2021 Distinguished Alumni Award recipient, Carroll L. Kelly. In 2000, the board established the Distinguished Alumni Committee to honor alumni of Goode Barren Township High School, Valier High School, and S-V High School. Born in Franklin County in 1938, to Aline (Cox) and Joseph Clyde Kelly, Carroll is a life-long resident of Sesser. He graduated from Goode Barren Township H.S. in 1956 before serving in the U.S. Army. He attended Southern Illinois Univ. and received his Bachelor of Science Degree in 1965 and his Masters of Science in Education in 1987. Carroll married Nancy (Williams) Kelly in 1967. Carroll and Nancy have two children and five grandchildren. Both of their children graduated from SVHS and continued their education to earn college degrees and have successful careers. For over 50 years, Mr. Kelly has served the S-V School District. He started teaching at S-V in 1965 and served as the boys football coach for 23 years; basketball coach for 10 years; and baseball and track coach for 10 years. Carroll was the District Athletic Director for 15 years (helped start the S-V Holiday tournament). After serving as principal, Carroll retired in 2000. After he retired, Carroll served as a board of education member for 12 years and spent 8 years as board president. He always took an interest and an active role in promoting education. He was the originator of the Bookshelf Reading Program and volunteered for the Mystery Reader Program. Carroll has put the education of all the children in the school community as a top priority. Carroll has been an active member of his community for many years. He served on the Sesser City Council for 36 years. He is a longtime member of the Sesser United Methodist Church and served on the Sesser United Methodist Church Administrative Council and as a Sunday school teacher. He is a member of the Sesser Masonic Lodge receiving a 50-year Pin award and served as Past Master for four years. He also was a member of the Franklin County Shriners, Ainad Temple Shriner, S-V Homecoming Assoc. and served on the Franklin Co. CASA Board as president for 8 years. Carroll Kelly has been a life-long advocate for children. Carroll is still making a difference and positive impact in the lives of his community. In recognition for his years of dedication to the community of Sesser; to the S-V School District; to his family, his country, and for his outstanding character, leadership, and accomplishments, Mr. Kelly will receive the Distinguished Alumni Award at the S-V High School graduation in May 2021. Mr. Kelly will also be publicly honored on the S-V High School Wall of Fame located in the High School Commons area. Each year, the Distinguished Alumni Committee considers nominations for the Distinguished Alumni Award. The recipients are chosen for their lifetime achievements, leadership, integrity, community service, etc. Nominations for the annual award should be sent to S-V Comm Unit School Dist.
