Cory Mohr Design helps homeowners upgrade living spaces

For more than a decade, Southern Illinoisans looking to give their kitchen, bath or practically any other part of their home an upscale look have turned to Cory Mohr. As the owner of Cory Mohr Design, he has been helping homeowners make the transformations of their dreams.

While a majority of Mohr’s work involves redesigns for kitchens and bathrooms, no part of the home is out of reach.

“We work through all sorts of remodels, even lay out new floorplans and design custom furniture,” Mohr said. “We are an interior design firm that specializes in kitchen and bath design.”

Originally a teacher at Cobden High School, Mohr began designing “on the side” as a means of allowing his wife to stay home with two daughters. With customers recognizing a talent, he went into the design business full time just a few years later, opening his Carbondale office and showroom in 2014.

“We’ve done everything from a simple kitchen redesign or bathroom remodel to complete layout of a $2 million home,” he said.

Mohr, who works closely with Johnson County craftsmen and cabinetmakers, is known for unique approaches and solutions, especially with cabinetry and solid surfaces.

“I feel like we shine in the design realm, but also with the craftmanship of the work,” he said. “The advantage of having local craftsmen is that we can tailor-fit pieces for individual homes. I mean, there’s no end to it … if I can draw it, they can build it.”

Mohr said he has designed hundreds of kitchens and bathrooms as well as dining rooms, gathering places and even traditional studies since beginning, but regardless of the project, each begins by getting to know more about the customers.

“We’re always going to start in the customer’s house,” he said. “We are going to talk about all of the things they want to do and the things they’d like to see. We’re talking hopes and dreams regardless of cost first because I want to hear what people have to say and what they want. We approach it all about design and function.

“Then we will draft layouts and pull together design and materials list and develop a proposal from there.”

The next step, Mohr says, is one that makes Cory Mohr Design different from many other companies.

“We will do a draft 3D model,” Mohr said. “Even after 10 years, I’m still blown away when we show up at a completed project and it looks exactly like it did on the computer model.

“Clients really enjoy being able to see their project in 3D. It helps them visualize and if they discover something that needs to be changed, we can manipulate the model right there when they are watching. Most of all, the modeling helps to make sure everything works, eliminating problems before we get to construction.”

He says the goal is to always make sure that the completed work fits together with the rest of the home and matches the lifestyle and needs of the homeowner.

Mohr says he recently began one of his company’s largest projects — flipping an old farmhouse located between Anna and Carbondale, but he cautions the “flip” is not a purchase-remodel-and sell type of effort.

“We are literally flipping the house, front to back,” he said. We’re taking the floorplan of the existing home and reversing it. It’s something I’m really excited about."

Like his other projects, this one will feature personalized design, high-quality materials and craftmanship.

“We like being a one-stop shop, taking projects from concept to completion,” he said. “We’re the designers and we work with the builders, suppliers and contractors.”

He said he wants to continue to build relationships with clients, taking on projects that are challenging and enjoyable. He adds that he hopes to grow the company’s custom furniture offerings in the future.

“It’s really nice to have furniture that compliments a new remodel,” he said.
