Shawnee High School teacher Jamie Nash-Mayberry was awarded a grant from the Illinois Retired Teachers Association Foundation for the high school's "Save the Levees, Save the Future" project.

The project, in which junior and senior students raise awareness of the deteriorating levees that protect their school from the Mississippi River, researches ways to reduce flooding.

The project is in its eighth year, and received $750 from the IRTAF grant to continue their efforts.

The Illinois Retired Teachers Association Foundation awards nearly $36,500 in grant money to several public school educators (Pre-K through 12) statewide.
