CAPE GIRARDEAU, Mo. — “Jesus Christ Superstar” opens the 2018-2019 Rhodes 101 Stops and Commerce Bank Jeanine Larson Dobbins Conservatory of Theatre and Dance Series at Southeast Missouri State University.
Performances are at 7:30 p.m. Sept. 26 to 29 and 2 p.m. Sept. 29 and 30 in the Donald C. Bedell Performance Hall at Southeast’s River Campus.
“This is the greatest rock opera ever written. It’s also the original musical of this genre, and it’s as exciting and relevant today as it was in the early 1970s,” Kenn Stilson, chair of The Jeanine Larson Dobbins Conservatory of Theatre and Dance, said. “We’ve waited a long time to do this show, and we have the talent to make this one of the best musicals we’ve ever produced.”
A timeless work, the rock opera is set against the backdrop of an extraordinary and universally known series of events seen, unusually, through the eyes of Judas Iscariot.
The first musical by Andrew Lloyd Webber and Tim Rice to be produced for the professional stage, “Jesus Christ Superstar” has wowed audiences for more than 40 years.
The popularity of the show has never waned, and the recent live NBC production of “Jesus Chris Superstar,” starring John Legend, is proof of that, Stilson said.
“Our production will have a similar feel, and I know our audiences are going to love this show,” he said.
