Paint an animal in folk art style at The Varsity Gallery

This King Charles Cavalier Spaniel by Heather Galler is an excellent example of highly stylized folk art.

The Varsity Gallery is hosting a workshop Sunday in which participants will paint a stylized folk art rendering of one of four animals.

“Brighten Up Your Life” will be taught by Mary Krainak Patterson, an artist and longtime Murphysboro High School art teacher.

Participants will walk away with an 11-inch by 14-inch canvas in the style of folk artist Heather Galler.

“This folk-art style is simplistic in form, rich in color and uses patterns throughout the body of the animal and the background,” Patterson said. “Participants are encouraged to find their own style and not be afraid to experiment.”

The workshop will take place from 2 to 4:30 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 26. Cost is $35 and includes all materials, a glass of sangria and snacks. Wine will be available for purchase.

Participants must register, purchase a ticket and choose the animal they wish to paint by Feb. 23. Dog lovers can choose a specific breed. Patterson will prepare the canvas for painting in class.

Go to The Varsity Center’s Facebook page at www.facebook.com/VarsityCenter for more details and to register for the class. The Varsity Gallery is at 418 S. Illinois Ave., Carbondale.
