C4 is an annual art show and competition held in the Surplus Gallery, at SIUC's Glove Factory. The show is open to SIU undergrads, graduate students and, for the first time in 2019, community members from within 100 miles of the university.

CARBONDALE — A long-running art exhibition and competition at Southern Illinois University Carbondale is growing in scope.

The 13th annual C4 Juried Art Exhibition at SIU Carbondale will for the first time be open to artists from anywhere within a 100-mile radius of the university, Bill Sieber, of Critical Forum, the SIU student organization that organizes the competition, wrote in an email to The Southern.

C4 has long welcomed community submissions, along with separate categories for graduate and undergraduate work.

But where community entries were previously taken only from the Carbondale area, they may now come from as far afield as Cape Girardeau, Paducah and St. Louis, Sieber said.

The event is also debuting an online submission platform, which will make applying easier for all artists, especially those outside Carbondale.

“We think this will promote the School of Art and Design, Southern Illinois University, as well as the nearby community,” Sieber said.

Each year, C4 is judged by a guest juror of acclaim in the world of visual art. This year, it will be Rusty Freeman, the director of visual arts at The Cedarhurst Center for the Arts in Mount Vernon, Sieber said.

Oct. 18 is the application deadline, and the exhibition will be open at SIUC’s Surplus Gallery from Oct. 28 to Nov. 1, with awards distributed at the closing reception. For more information and the application, visit criticalforum.org.
