CARBONDALE — The Varsity is pleased to welcome a new exhibit created by Kristopher and Rebekah Todd, artists and owners of Triphammer Tattoo in Carbondale. An opening reception is Friday, Oct. 12, the date of their 10th wedding anniversary.
Kristopher is a Murphysboro native. He received a Bachelor of Fine Arts from Southern Illinois University in 2000. His initial plan was to become a blacksmith, but, by 2002, he had decided another medium was his true calling: tattooing. He moved to Albuquerque, New Mexico, and by 2005 became owner of his first tattoo shop in Rio Rancho, New Mexico.
In 2008, Kristopher met Rebekah, his wife and business partner, who is a native of Rio Rancho. After moving across country to Carbondale, the two married on Oct. 12, 2008. Kristopher and Rebekah decided to open Triphammer Tattoo, where they continue to create tattoos and display their paintings.
“I carry a solid attraction to the freakish, ugly, deformities exposed in life,” Rebekah says. “Submerging myself in the body modification and tattoo culture allows me to examine a legion of human emotions. These elements are the embodiment of my creations.
“I use this artistic sense not only to establish a higher quality of life, but to inspire creation and confidence in all people and things encompassing the world we live in.”
Kristopher says his paintings “all follow a natural pattern of process, blank ideas, nothing particular as a final piece in mind other than the initial movement of my body being captured by mediums I choose to create with.
“The idea develops by improvisation but not without careful after thought being applied. I enjoy the many textures of the world and want three-dimensional mixtures of both physical and implied levels to be seen in the finality of the work.”
The pair’s exhibit will run through Saturday, Nov. 3 and is available to view during Varsity events and by appointment by calling 618-457-5353. The opening reception is from 5 to 7 p.m. Friday, Oct. 12. Admission is free, and The Varsity Bar will be open for purchase of wine, beer, cocktails, soda and snacks.
The Varsity is at 418 S. Illinois Ave. For more information, visit facebook.com/varsitycenter.
