“We are really noted for that hospitality,” Mills said.
She added that it is the volunteers who are responsible for the event’s hospitality. Volunteers apply and are chosen in advance of the event. They are required to attend an orientation meeting, too.
Amy Mills said the event has some fantastic volunteers, including Murphysboro High School Key Club and Marching Band.
“Key Club comes out in force. They are great representatives of our town and youth,” Amy Mills said. “The marching band marches down the midway. It’s a slice of Americana.”
Some volunteers return year after year. Last year, Murphysboro Barbecue Cook-off honored longtime volunteer Abe Keen, who passed away in March.
“The weather looks like it will be a little on the warm side, but it’s going to be a splendid weekend,” Amy Mills said.
