Benton Consolidated High School has recognized Theresa Heinz, Trevor Johnston, Trevor McKinney, Marcela Mendez, Tayloran Miller and Taylor Yucus.

Heinz, 17, was chosen for outstanding work in academics, leadership, service and WYSE. She is an Illinois State Scholar and named to the Lion’s Club Top Ten. She is a member of National Honor Society, National Society of High School Scholars, WYSE, Freshman Mentoring Program, history club and pep club.

The daughter of Michele Heinz of Benton, she plans to enter the physician’s assistant program at University of Southern Indiana.

Johnston, 18, was chosen for outstanding work in academics, leadership, service, yearbook, student council, mentoring, drama, chorus, WYSE and speech. He is a National Merit Scholar and Illinois State Scholar, received Lion’s Club Achievement Award and EFL Top 25 and named to Quad State Honor Choir. He is senior class vice-president, executive student council vice-president, Fellowship of Christian Students officer and state tennis qualifier and a member of National Honor Society, student council, yearbook staff, mentor, madrigals and WYSE, speech, basketball and golf.

The son of Mike and Becky Johnston of Benton, he plans to major in English at Butler University.

McKinney, 17, was chosen for outstanding work in academics, leadership, service, history club and bass fishing. He received McKendree Leadership Scholarship, McKendree Presidential Scholarship and McKendree Bass Fishing Scholarship. He is a member of National Honor Society, student chamber, history club, SAE Club and the bass fishing team.

The son of Mike and Daina McKinney of Benton, he plans to study elementary education at McKendree University.

Mendez, 18, was chosen for outstanding work in academics, leadership, service, mentoring, yearbook and athletics. She received an IHSA Academic Achievement Award, is yearbook editor and a member of National Honor Society, National Art Honor Society, student chamber, Freshman Mentoring Program and girls’ volleyball and basketball teams.

The daughter of Nicolas and Patricia Mendez of Benton, she plans to major in bilingual education at Millikin University.

Miller, 18, was chosen for outstanding work in academics, leadership, service, chorus, madrigals and athletics. She is an Illinois State Scholar and on the president’s list a Rend Lake College. She is a member of National Honor Society, cross country and track teams, pep club, history club, student chamber and madrigals.

The daughter of Ryan and Tricia Miller of Benton, she plans to major in pre-optometry and biology.

Yucus, 17, was chosen for outstanding work in academics, leadership, service, chorus, drama, speech, musical, WYSE and athletics. He is an Illinois State Scholar, member of National Honor Society, was named all-conference in cross country, received first place in physics and chemistry at WYSE regional competition, and 1st Place WYSE Physics and Chemistry Regional, and first superior in trumpet trio, trumpet solo, vocal solo, madrigal group, vocal duet and bell choir at IHSA Solo and Ensemble Contest. He is class president and student body president, and a member of speech, plays, musical, history club, student chamber, advanced choir, madrigals, band and Scholar Bowl, WYSE, cross country and track teams.

The son of Robin and Debbie Yucus of Benton, he plans to study eningeering, law or communications at the U.S. Air Force Academy.

Commencement will be at 8 p.m. May 14 in Rich Herrin Gymnasium at Benton Consolidated High School. Baccalaureate will be at 4 p.m. May 8 in Immanuel Baptist Church.
