Carterville High School has recognized Connor Bybee, Ellie Clements, Avery English, Blake Hicks, Harrison Thomas and Deep Patel for academic excellence.
Bybee, 18, is an Illinois State Scholar, soccer team MVP and placed first in computer science in WYSE Competition. He is a member of National Honor Society.
The son of Mark and Diane Bybee of Carterville, he plans to major in cyber security Southeast Missouri State University.
Clements, 17, is an Illinois State Scholar and Nebraska State Optimist Oratorical Champion. She is a member of National Honor Society, Beta Club, choir, jazz band, drama club and foreign language club.
The daughter of Joseph and Erika Clements of Herrin, she plans to study music at Brigham Young University.
English, 18, is an Illinois State Scholar and was named all-state first team softball, all-state second team basketball, all-south basketball and softball four times and all-conference basketball and softball four times. She is a member of National Honor Society, IHSA Student Advisory Committee and basketball, softball and WYSE teams.
The daughter of Robert English and Elizabeth Tregoning of Carterville, she plans to major in aerospace engineering at Missouri University of Science and Technology.
Hicks, 18, 2016 National Merit Commended Student, 2016-17 Illinois State Scholar, 2014 IHSFCA All-State Academic Football Player and 2014 IHSFCA All-State Honorable Mention Football Player. He is a member of baseball and football teams, Future Business Leaders of America, Scholar Bowl, WYSE, student council and student leadership committee.
The son of Steve Hicks of Mulkeytown and Lisa Nation of Carterville, he plans to major in pharmacy at University of Mississippi.
Patel, 18, is an Illinois State Scholar, member of National Honor Society and band president. He also is a member of rocket team, drum line, bowling team, Youth and Government and WYSE
The son of Rikesh and Daxaben Patel of Herrin, he plans to study aerospace engineering at Georgia Institute of Technology.
Thomas, 17, is on the IHSA All-State Academic Team, cross country sectional champion, Scholastic Bowl Team State Runner-Up, placed fourth in State WYSE Physics, Gold Key Scholastic Art Portfolio recipient, Wendy's High School Heisman State Finalist and an Illinois State Scholar. He is a member of the cross country and track, Scholastic Bowl, Future Business Leaders of America, National Honor Society and WYSE.
The son of Howard and Cheryl Thomas of Carterville, he plans to major in biomedical engineering at Vanderbilt University.
Commencement will be at 7 p.m. May 14 in the high school gymnasium. Baccalaureate was May 8 in Christian Covenant Fellowship.
