2 apples, peeled and thinly sliced
2 tablespoons white sugar
1 tablespoon flour
¼ cup sliced almonds
¼ cup raisins
1 package frozen puff pastry sheets, thawed*
1 teaspoon water
Preheat your oven to 375 degrees. Line a baking sheet with parchment paper and spray with cooking spray. In a large mixing bowl, combine the apple slices, sugar, flour, almonds and raisins. Mix these together until the apples are well coated with the sugar and flour.
Place one sheet of puff pastry on the parchment-lined baking sheet and use a moist rolling pin to roll the pastry to approximately 12x16-inch (this does not have to be exact). Place the apple mixture onto the puff pastry in a single layer leaving about a one-inch border. Fold the short sides over the apples then begin rolling the pastry lengthwise similar to a jelly roll. Turn the strudel so it is seam side down. This may be easily done by using the parchment paper to turn the pastry over.
Crack the egg into a small bowl and whisk it together with the water to create an egg wash. Brush the egg wash over the strudel. Cut ¼-inch deep slits diagonally across the top of the strudel and bake for 35 to 40 minutes or until golden brown.
*Two sheets of puff pastry typically come in a box. You can extend this recipe to make two strudels.
