Recipe | Porridge

Porridge is a simple everyday breakfast in Ireland. Steel cut oats give this dish a chewier texture than our more common rolled oats. Top with a pinch of salt, cold milk, and Irish butter before serving.

Yield: 3 cups

Time: 20 minutes

3 cups water

½ teaspoon salt

1 cup Irish steel cut oats

Bring the water and salt to a low rolling boil over medium heat. Stir in the oats and reduce the heat to a low simmer. Cook for about 20 minutes or until your porridge is the desired consistency.

Remove from the heat, cover and let stand for 2 more minutes before serving. Serve hot with cold milk and an extra pinch of salt. Although not traditional, a bit of creamy Irish butter will add additional flavor.
