You can make sandwiches for backyard picnics, sourdough French toast for breakfast, or serve it on the side with a balanced dinner. Here’s everything you need to get your sourdough starter going.
1) Make your sourdough starter.
If you aren’t gifted with a starter that’s passed down through the family, making your own sourdough starter can seem like a daunting task. Fortunately, all you need is flour and water. Starting with an all-purpose flour will give you the most predictability. To start, you’ll need a 2-quart glass or plastic container, 4 ounces of all-purpose flour, and 4 ounces of water. Combine the ingredients in the container and stir until the batter is smooth. Then cover the container with plastic wrap and place it at room temperature. If you’re nervous about starting from scratch, you can also purchase a live sourdough starter.
2) Feed your starter.
As wild yeast grows within your starter, you might start to see some small bubbles in your starter. Continue to feed your starter by adding equal parts water and flour every 24 hours. A food scale can be helpful in getting the right parts water and flour and the perfect starter consistency.
3) Be patient.
A sourdough starter can take up to 5 days to be ready for use. Once those small bubbles turn into frothy bubbles and the smell changes from slightly yeasty to sour and vinegary, your starter should be ready to use.
