Ten years ago, we set out to provide our readers in Southern Illinois with a magazine to supplement our news coverage in The Southern Illinoisan.
Along the way, we learned some things — like the fact that this kind of endeavor takes a lot of hard work.
And, we’ve changed some things — we called the publication Southern Illinois Magazine at first, and it wasn’t long before we changed that title to Life & Style in Southern Illinois.
And, of course, some things stay the same and never change.
Back in the spring of 2008, when we initially launched Southern Illinois Magazine, we said “each edition will focus on the people, places and events that make life good here.”
We also wanted it to be of interest to our readers, but also to those who visit our region for the sights, sounds and good times. We were going to publish four editions throughout the year, all with different topics that related to what was going on at that time.
I’d say we’ve accomplished that and then some.
That first edition featured, among other things, wineries — of course — and the Southern Illinois Miners, a franchise that came into existence just the year before.
And while we still focus on Southern Illinois, Life & Style also will reach out to other places near our region like the Metro East, Paducah and Cape Girardeau. There’s a lot of fun things happening in those areas, too, and after all, it’s just a short car ride away.
We’ll also continue to look for more topics among the places and people we write about within the pages.
Over the years, the look of the magazine has obviously changed. We’ve carefully taken into account how the magazine blends with the newspaper, incorporating our brand into the magazine’s logo and masthead.
All of these changes over the years has made Life & Style a better product. And, it’s something that we promise to continue.
So, let’s raise a glass to the last 10 years. And, let’s also raise a glass to many more.
