CARBONDALE - Southern Illinois University Carbondale associate head men's basketball coach Rodney Watson is expected to be named head coach at the University of Southern Indiana.
Watson, who has been with the Salukis for more than 20 years, had been rumored to be in line for the position. A press conference for a formal announcement is scheduled for 2:30 p.m. at Southern Indiana.
When contacted about the announcement, a spokeman for Southern Indiana athletics neither denied nor confirmed that Watson was the pick.
Watson replaces Rick Herdes, who resigned May 8 amid "irregularities" within the men's basketball program, reports the Evansville Courier and Press. An investigation by the school turned up five NCAA infractions related to extra benefits for players that involved transportation benefits, academics and improper communication with a student athlete prior to his signing with USI.
USI forfeited all 27 of its wins from the 2008-09 season and returned more than $9,000 in money the school was provided for participating in the NCAA Division II tournament in March.
