MARION - A 50-year-old former hypnotherapist accused of predatory criminal sexual assault of a child turned himself in to Williamson County authorities Wednesday. Dwight Summers of Akin was released after posting $8,000 bail.
A warrant had been issued Tuesday for Summers, who is facing two counts of predatory criminal sexual assault of a child under 13 and one count of aggravated criminal sexual abuse.
Summers is a former hypnotherapist who had an office in Marion.
In a previous case, Summers pleaded guilty in January 1993 to a misdemeanor battery charge and was sentenced to two years' probation, admitting that he touched a woman's breasts on June 7, 1991.
Charges filed Tuesday in Williamson County Circuit Court allege that during fall 2002, Summers had inappropriate sexual contact with a girl under 13, and had similar contact with a different girl under 13 in February 2002. A warrant for Summers was issued and bond was set at $80,000.
Predatory criminal sexual assault is a Class X felony, and is punishable by up to 30 years in prison. There is no option for probation if convicted of a Class X felony.
In the earlier case, Summers was initially charged with molesting two women who had gone to his office for help to stop smoking. Three charges stemmed from the alleged incidents on May 29 and June 7, both in 1991.
About a month later, Summers also was accused of molesting a third woman between August and September 1990.
Summers had operated Dwight's Hypnotherapy in Marion since June 1, 1988. He stopped practicing hypnotherapy after the charges were filed, and became a coal miner.
Summers also performed in public as a magician and a clown. His address on the charges filed Tuesday was Magic Lane in Akin.
