SOUTHERN ILLINOIS - No high school hazing incidents, such as the one at Glenbrook North High School, have been reported in Southern Illinois in recent history.
However, three hazing incidents have taken place in student organizations at Southern Illinois University Carbondale in the past several years.
In October 1995 the Delta Sigma Theta sorority allegedly engaged in a hazing ritual against several initiates in which "injuries resulted."
In October 1998 the Phi Beta Sigma fraternity had its Registered Student Organization status suspended for four years. The punishment stemmed from an incident in which members of the fraternity allegedly struck a person in the chest repeatedly, causing him to suffer a severe asthma attack.
In October 2000 two members of the Beta Phi Pi fraternity reported to police they were subjected to paddling by other members of the group.
