A large crowd was on hand to welcome back the Veterans Honor flight at the Veterans Airport of Southern Illinois in October of 2017.

The Veterans Honor Flight is trying something a little bit different for its fourth flight, in which World War II and Korean War veterans, and any veterans with a terminal illness, are taken to Washington, D.C., to visit their monuments.

When the veterans return home the evening of Tuesday, Oct. 16, a festival atmosphere will be waiting for them at Veterans Airport of Southern Illinois in Marion.

There will be live music by Matt Basler, Kali Bonner and the JOY Singers from Marion First Baptist Church. Four food trucks will also be at the airport — Jordo's Pizza, La Rana Taco Truck, Easy Street So Co Food and Grill Talk. A portion of proceeds from food truck sales will go to Veterans Honor Flight of Southern Illinois, a nonprofit that pays to take veterans to Washington for a day. Veterans do not pay anything to go on the flight.

Food trucks start serving at 5 p.m., and music starts at 5:30.

Organizers said previous enthusiasm from the public led them to offer more entertainment options for the welcome home party.
