CARBONDALE — A body was discovered on the 900 block of East Main Street in Carbondale after officers responded to an active fire in the area. 

Sgt. Amber Ronketto of the Carbondale Police Department confirmed that the body was discovered on the scene Tuesday morning.

"I can confirm that there was a body discovered this morning off of Piles Fork Creek near East Main Street," she said. "Officers are actively investigating the incident."

According to a release from Carbondale Police, respondents discovered the body after the fire was extinguished. The cause and manner of death, as well as the identity of the deceased, is undetermined at this time. 

The Illinois State Police Crime Scene Services Unit and the Jackson County Coroner’s Office are assisting with the investigation.
