World War II veteran Wayne Carroll reacts to the welcome home ceremony for the Veterans Honor Flight at the Veterans Airport of Southern Illinois in October. Sixty-eight veterans spent the day in Washington, D.C., visiting war memorials and museums with the second trip put on by the Veterans Honor Flight of Southern Illinois.

To celebrate a completed remodel of the Walmart Supercenter on the east side of Carbondale, the company is making a donation to Veterans Honor Flight of Southern Illinois.

Walmart will present a $20,000 check to Veterans Honor Flight organizers on Friday. The Honor Flight takes veterans from Southern Illinois to Washington, D.C., so that they can visit their war memorials and monuments.

Also on Friday, as part of the remodel celebration, there will be family-friendly activities, refreshments, giveaways and samples. The event starts at 8 a.m.

The remodel of the Carbondale store is part of a state-wide effort by the company in 2018, which includes updated electronics departments and fitting rooms, wider aisles and lower fixtures, and added variety in the tool department.

The store is located at 1450 E. Main St.
